Assiah Phinisee is a 10-year-old, double liver transplant recipient, who in May 2008 was diagnosed with a drug induced hepatitis as a result of her ingestion of Macrobid, an antibody prescribed to her mother while breastfeeding Assiah at 6 days old. Following her initial diagnosis, Assiah was misdiagnosed with biliary atresia and underwent her first liver transplant at the tender age of one. By the time Assiah's was 4 years old she underwent a second liver transplant in 2009. As a result of Assiah's gift of life, she and her mother, Rasheena Phinisee, founded A Star Name Assiah Liver Fund, a nonprofit that works to raise awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation in communities of color.
To achieve this goal Assiah has published a children's transplant book that has been featured on networks such as FOX, CBS, ABC and the nations number one iHeart Urban Radio station, 105.1 The BreakfastClub that airs on more than 50 stations across the country hosted by Charlamagne ThaGod, Angela Yee and DJ Envy. Assiah's story was also shared in the 2017, New York Times Bestseller, Black Privilege by Charlamagne ThaGod. In 2017 her organizational initiatives impacted more than 1 million people and her continued goal is to promote her healthy "Donor Lifestyle" initiative through engagement, education and empowerment. Assiah's initiatives are further promoted through Assiah's Liver-Aid Lemonade stand, a healthy organic lemonade used to educate consumers about the beneficial effects of lemons on the liver and through Assiah's Lemonade Beauty Bars, a homemade soap used to educate consumers about the benefit of natural skincare products that reduce health risk, all while promoting Assiah's message, that organ donation saves lives.
As a result of these initiatives Assiah has landed opportunities like her 2018 OPO tour sponsored by Community Tissue Service, a collaboration with 2018 Miss America candidate, Miss Indiana Darian Arch, and recognition as a National Community Leader by Essence as a 2018 and 2019 Community Corner Exhibitor for the 24th & 25th Annual Essence Festival. Through continued community support this year Assiah's campaign will reach more than 1 million people with the hope that they can reshape how society thinks about organ and tissue donation by creating lifestyle choices that continuously put organ and tissue donation on the forefront in communities of color.
